Subject: Science (Five Food Groups)


Objective: As a result of their schooling students will:

Name foods that fit into the five food groups.

Cut and paste pictures of various foods for each food group.

Identify fruits and vegetables.

Learn about the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan.



The book, Ramadan, by Suhaib Hamid Ghazi

Glue, scissors, old newspapers and magazines



Teacher will read the story Ramadan, by Suhaib Hamid Ghazi to the students. Throughout the story the teacher will point out the different types of food that the family is eating. If the teacher has already read the story to the students for a previous activity, then the teacher should just review the story and discuss some of the different types of food that the family was eating in the story.

The teacher should then draw and write the five different food groups and explain why it is important to have servings of each when eating.

Teacher should then show the pages of the book that show the family sitting down at the dinner table and eating various food, ask the children if they see various food from the five food groups.

Activity: Have the students working in groups and find as many pictures of food for the five food groups in old magazines and newspapers as they can. Have them paste them on their worksheet sand draw a line to match them with the right food groups.
