Haikus

Grades: Seven and Eight grade

Subject: Reading/ Creative Writing

Time needed: 40 minutes

 

Objective: As a result of their schooling,

Students will learn about the holiest month of the Islamic calendar through Haiku poems.

Students will learn about the basic Haiku poetry format.

 

Materials:

The book Ramadan, By Suhaib Hamid Ghazi

Markers, pencils, crayons

 

Procedure:

Teacher will read the story Ramadan, By Suhaib Hamid Ghazi. After reading the story the teacher will ask the students basic comprehension questions about the book for example, what happens in the month of Ramadan? Where do Muslims go to worship? How many days do Muslims fast in the month of Ramadan?, What other religions practice fasting?, etc.

Then the teacher will explain to the students that they will be writing their own Haikus. Teacher will first explain to the students that Haiku poetry format follow a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

The teacher then will give the students the topic Ramadan to write about. The teacher and students will come up with a topic together as the teacher writes it on the board. For example,

 Ramadan

Ramadan is here

It’s time for people to share

So care don’t stare!
