(Class One)

LEARNING THE QUR’ANIC ARABIC

ARABIC 100

JULY 3 – AUG. 31, 2017

6:00 PM TO 8:00 PM EVERY WEDNESDAY

IQRA’ INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION SKOKIE, IL

DR. TANVEER AZMAT

One of the unique characteristics of the American Muslim community is its interest with understanding the Qur’an. The community has experimented various ways to learn the Qur’anic Arabic with mixed results. However, this movement must continue as the Qur’an is a direct and personal communication with Allah. No one can teach us better how to get guidance from the Qur’an when Allah Himself is the teacher, only if we understand what He is saying.

In this class we will learn as much Arabic that is necessary and sufficient to understand the Qur’an at basic level that can be improved by further self practice. The course will teach and provide tools that help in understanding the Qur’an. There are finite numbers of words in the Qur’an – nouns, verbs, prepositions, pronouns, etc. We will emphasize the most repeated words and how they appear in different forms in the Qur’an. Our emphasis will not be to learn to write, speak, or become and Arabic language expert. Our purpose is to understand the Qur’an in its Arabic language.

The course is designed for professionals, college students, high school students and adults interested in understanding the Qur’an better. It is assumed that the class already knows to read the Qur’an in Arabic, though the meaning is not understood. The class will take place once a week on Wednesday, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at IQRA’ International Foundation, 7450 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, IL 60077. It is an eight weeks course taught in English.

Dr. Tanveer Azmat will teach the class. He has been studying the Qur’an with various Qur’anic scholars since 1982. Dr. Azmat recently completed Ph.D. in the methodology of understanding the Qur’an. He has been teaching, “An Introduction to the Islamic Scripture, the Qur’an” at Wilbur Wright College, Chicago, for the last two and a half years. Currently, he is working with IQRA’ International Educational Foundation as a consultant.

This course is designed to teach the methodologies of understanding the Qur’an. Each methodology will be reviewed in terms of its benefits, short comings, and its impact on the meaning. Since the majority of Muslims do not know Arabic, we will learn a method that helps to understand the Qur’an in English and if practiced regularly it may develop skills to start understanding the Qur’anic in Arabic.  Fundamental questions like the nature of our perceptual mechanism, the process of understanding, the difference between the language of science and language of religion will be discussed. There will be a short review of the most famous tafīr scholars and their tafsīrs.
